On 20 May 2026, the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) hosted a breakfast meeting at The Westin, Dhaka, focusing on the transformative role of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in Bangladesh’s business and investment ecosystem.
AmCham President Mr. Syed Ershad Ahmed opened the floor by emphasizing that robust IPR enforcement is vital to attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and giving global buyers the confidence to source from Bangladesh.
Ms. Shilpi Jha (Senior Commercial Specialist & IP Policy Advisor-South Asia, U.S. Embassy, New Delhi) highlighted the importance of IPR for the economy. She recommended introducing training for enforcement officials to enhance their capacity to protect intellectual property.
Following Ms Jha’s remarks, participants shared their insights and posed questions regarding the operational challenges of intellectual property protection rights.
The event concluded with a consensus that building a robust IPR regime is an immediate necessity for Bangladesh’s smooth LDC graduation. The discussion benefited greatly from the distinguished presence and active participation of AmCham Executive Committee members, Mr. Al-Mamun M Rashel (Treasurer) and Mr. Mirza Sajib Raihan, alongside Mr. Paul Frost (Commercial Counselor) and other U.S. Embassy officials, AmCham members, and prominent industry stakeholders, and Mr. Chowdhury Kaiser Mohammad Riyadh, Executive Director of AmCham.
