The American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham)

hosted a dialogue with Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, Distinguished Fellow, CPD, at the Renaissance Dhaka Gulshan Hotel on 08th October 2024. AmCham President Mr. Syed Ershad Ahmed joined as the Session Chair, Vice President Mr. Eric M. Walker, Treasurer Mr. Al-Mamun M Rashel and Executive Committee members Mr. Md. Moinul Huq and Ms. Rubaba Dowla, and a few AmCham members including Mr. Syed Mohammad Kamal, Country Manager, MasterCard Singapore Holding Pte. Ltd. , Mr. Nowshad Ali Sarkar, Country Manager GE International INC., Mr. Habib Bhuiyan, Country Manager, Excelerate Energy Bangladesh Ltd., Mr. Kabir Ahmed, Chairman, Conveyor Logistics Limited; President, BAFFA, attended the breakfast meeting.

The interim government formed a 12-member committee in August 2024, led by Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, to prepare a white paper on the state of Bangladesh’s economy so that strategic steps can be taken to stabilize the economy, reach Sustainable Development Goals, and mitigate the challenges after Bangladesh graduates from the LDC grouping. The committee has already had a few discussion events with different stakeholders to understand the current scenario and to get recommendations from the partners in socio-economic development.


In a discussion with a few AmCham members at the breakfast meeting, Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya gave a brief idea of the economic condition on a broader level. He also shared a basic overview of the methodology of white paper drafting. The white paper on the state of Bangladesh’s economy will offer a comprehensive analysis of the current economic landscape, highlighting key challenges and opportunities for growth and stability. AmCham members shared their feedback and highlighted important insights and recommendations for effective governance reform and promoting a conducive environment for foreign investment.
